Featured in Bondville... and a Hollywood movie

I was very happy this afternoon to discover an email by Steph Hutkin editor of Bondville letting me know my illustrations had been featured in todays post titled Kids Room Ideas: Colourful, Creative, Shared Bedroom

The beautiful photographs were taken by the lovely Anni Payne from Milk and Honey Photography. I am collaborating with them currently on their new website which I will be sure to announce when it is re-launched. Their photographs are truly delicious!

I also have other exciting news regarding my illustrations being featured in an upcoming Hollywood movie featuring Julianne Moore but I'll wait till I receive the photographs from the shoot next Tuesday before I post anything more....

Miss Little Album and Launch

I have been very privileged to work once again with the uber talented Miss Little (Sarah McCallum)

I designed her previous E.P. 'A Place Without Time' and this time around we collaborated on the design of her first album 'When Things Fall Apart and Into Place'.

With beautiful photographs by Sally Flegg and Miss Little's inspiring music it was a really intuitive process creating the album artwork. We imagined a forest filled with creatures which were the imaginary landscape to accompany the dreamy photographs.

Miss Little launches her album this Friday night and is supported by the very entertaining Brendan MacLean. Miss Little is incredibly talented and is not to be missed!

Preparing for Art Workshop - Childrens Hospital Randwick

Hi there,

Its already July!! and its been a long time between posts! Mi dispiace!!

I've been asked back for another workshop by the captains of the Starlight room.... The last one was a success and this time we are going to do something even more fun... creating a forest together.

We will use pencil, paint, fabric, cut paper, texters... whatever we can get our creative hands on.

The children will be free to use their imaginations and add whatever they would like to the forest.... could be birds, ladders, a tent, giant worms, and monsters... I'm sure they can come up with even better ideas.

I will make sure all their names appear next to the artwork when it is put up in the Starlight room for all the kids, adults and Captains to enjoy...

Looking forward to it!!! :)

I'll post what it looks like after tomorrow... wooo hooo

Sydney Children's Hospital Workshop

This week is pretty exciting with an art workshop lined up at Sydney Children's Hospital this Thursday.

I was invited the the very wonderful Roxanne Fea who co-ordinates all the exhibitions at SCH. I will be exhibiting in a solo show again towards the end of the year which I am happy about. Art has a powerful effect and the art really does add some joy to the corridoors of the hospital. I think it's a great idea.

I've decided for the workshop to focus on collage and texture, I love these two things. Using lots of textures on paper, stencilling and cutting to create the final images.

Below are some photos my lovely sis took of me prepping and experimenting. It has been fun to let go a bit and splatter some paint about!

I'll post again after the workshop and let you know how it all went. I'm looking forward to meeting the children and other adults involved in this great program.

New Work

I'm very happy to release the first illustration in a new series of work for 2011. Inspired by visits to dad in the 1980's and looking at his Pink Floyd Albums, collections of feathers and interest in space and the galaxy I dedicate this first work to him (Angelo).

This particular image is called Space Dreaming and incorporates my new love of geometric forms and triangles, bright fushcia's, lemons, limes, sky blues, teals and rich blacks. Then splatters of yellow like dad's triple J t-shirt from the 80's that I use to wear.

I guess this is the beginning of a nostalgic series of work....

Rosie Catalano - My sister's E.P. Launch

It been a while... yes a very long while since I last blogged. I promise weekly updates from now on.

I currently share a studio with some amazing artists and illustrators and will write about them in the coming months.

In the meantime my very talented and wonderfully gifted sister Rosie Catalano is having an e.p. launch next Saturday, 8pm at Carriage works in Redfern.

Rosie's music will move you with her beautiful and evocative voice and clever lyrics. I designed her E.P. and decided on bright bold edgy colours which compliment Rosie's sound. The photograph is made by the very talented Nirrimi whom Rosie and I met when we were little kids through our parents.

This is the second E.P. I have designed for my sister and I always enjoy the journey. Her drive, loyalty, dedication and creativity have inspired me and I'm really excited to be seeing her perform next week alongside her support act Leroy Lee.

I hope you and your friends/family/partner can make it too.

Upcoming Magnolia Square Market Sydney

Hello!

I am happy to be part of the upcoming Magnolia Square Markets in Randwick next weekend and will be busy preparing for it over the next week or so.

In other exciting news I am moving into my first ever studio. Gone are the days of balancing living space with work space. It is a friendly, light filled space that I heard about through PepperStitches. Thank you! I remember seeing her blog about moving into a studio and feeling inspired to do the same, now I will be too! I'm looking forward to getting an easel and canvas out and exploring painting.

Shout out too to my friend Amy Cunliffe who took photos of me for PR. They are great and considering I don;t like being photographed you did very well with me, thank you.

Over the Christmas break I am planning on creating a new series of work. I will be organising an exhibition for next year too so I will keep you posted!

See you soon! X Nikki

October News!

I can't believe it is October already and I'm quickly learning that this is a very busy time of the year.

I am excited to announce that I have a pop up shop in the city at Gaffa Gallery. My illustrations are on display and for sale until late November. The lovely people at Finders Keepers have collaborated with Gaffa to make this possible for myself and other designers/artists. Frankie Magazine also have a special reading room with 2011 diaries, calendars, magazines and photo books. Very cosy : )

The Sydney Children's Hospital Randwick exhibition Daydream is now up and running (on level 2). Lovely Roxanne Fea is the curator there. It was humbling to be there and put the work up with one of their volunteers Carolyn. I have decided to get involved and volunteer with their program which involves art and other activities with the children there.

This weekend coming up 9th and 10th of October I am having a stall at the Finders Keepers Markets. I am super uber excited and it is my first real 'business trip'. I would love to meet some new Melbournians. I like that place, they seem to love their art and craft!

And one more thing before I go, I am participating in the Mathildas Markets at Paddington Town Hall on the 30th October. It is my first time and I heard it is fab so I hope you can make it along.

Till next time... love and peace

September News!

This is an exciting month. Rosie and I have a new story/colouring book called Isabel and her Pirate Ship.

"The story is about a young girl named Isabel who would much rather be exploring the world than sitting in a classroom. She imagines sailing the ferocious seas, soaring high above the clouds and feasting in arabian palaces."

I am also having a market stall this Saturday at UNSW, Kensington called the Awfully Nice Market from 9am to 4pm... I'll be selling my cards, prints and Mitsu the book! Mitsu is also available at my store www.nikkicatalano.bigcartel.com

Next month in October I am having a stall at The Finders Keepers Markets in Melbourne. This is their first ever Melbourne Market and I'm very excited to be involved. Hope you can make it along! xo
